lately i've noticed our eating habits have been going down the drain. you'd think i'd be feeding my family very healthy, appetizing things, considering my love for good food and nutrition. however, the mac and shmack, pizza, hot dogs, and chips somehow manage to find themselves on my table more frequently. i admit: they're cheap, quick and the boys like them. but honestly, what the heck is in that junk? have you ever read the ingredients? nasty! half of them aren't even from real foods.
so why the call for help? i need your healthy recipes!! and i need any ideas that have worked for your family that are healthy and everyone in your family likes? i realize this may be one of those million dollar questions that every mother struggles with, especially around 4 pm everyday. however, i am desperate and i need a fresh look at things.
gracias.

Annie!!
I am always thinking the same...trying to have healthy, fast, yummy meals that everyone will eat. I was actually thinking I'd start posting some of my ideas on my blog...
But, a couple of recent finds that are my fast options: at Trader Joe's and at Costco they have frozen spinach pies (all natural). One pie serves 5 and you just pop it in the oven for 45 minutes.
I get the Annie's (natural) Mac and Cheese, Trader Joes also has a good natural Mac and Cheese (it's a $1.00/box here).
Do they have a Trader Joe's around you? You'd love it...all natural and organic foods. They also do a good chicken bbq frozen pizza.
I'll let you know when I start posting some recipes. Last year I tried some new and ultra healthy soups, a couple my kids do eat.
Keep up the good work! Love ya!
Yes I definitely struggle with trying to eat and buy foods that are healthy and don't have all the nasty additives and junk in them, but you are right! It is HARD!! I thought I would recommend a blog that I think is really interesting (hopefully you do too). It is enlightenedhomemaker.blogspot.com. She has some good recipes on there and overall the blog is just about nutrition and good food (and avoiding the bad). If you want to see the recipes only, you can go to the bottom of the blog and there are labels for seeing only what you want (but the entire blog is interesting). She also has links on the side to a few great recipe blogs. I like "My Kitchen Cafe" and it has links to a TON of recipes. Also do you have fresh n' easy stores there? We have one right up the road and it is inexpensive and their brand is all natural with no artificial anything. If you ever get one there I would highly recommend it! Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!
I always have a ton of receipes but just forget about them so to avoid the 4 o'clock stress of what's for dinner I like to sit down once a month or so and write out a menu for the month and then put it up so I know what to cook in advance and I can make sure I have all the ingredients... There is nothing worse than wanting to fix something and not having the main ingredient.... I don't always follow it but then I at least have an idea and I can plan for days that are more busy or mutual nights or whatever.... Good luck :)
Ok, so this has nothing to do with recipes - although if you get a good one, pass it on - but I just wanted to say how miserably sad I am after looking at pictures of the Badger Reunion and wishing i had been there. Sarah Cotton and Camie and Annie and the itsy-bitsy spider. It's too much for a girl to stand. Ok, sobbing over. Tell Sarah Cotton I love her and hi from me! P.S. Did I tell you our old car now lives in Montpelier? We sold it to a guy up there. So if you see a red 4-runner, Wave. :)
i'm not a pro by any means, but here is a good easy idea:
whole wheat pita bread pizzas
just use the ww-pitas and put out some healthy options for toppings and let the kids make their own. then cook in the oven for about 10 min on 400, or microwave if they are really hungry. i am interested to see what other people comment as well.
Here are two ideas. I just discovered that I can make fruit leather without too much trouble. Get a quart of peaches, apples, whatever and blend it with 1/2 c water (you may want to stove top it first to soften the fruit). Next, spray a large baking sheet and pour the fruit on the pan, spread evenly. Turn the oven on to WARM and bake the fruit for approx 4 hours. Keep the oven propped open with a wooden spoon so the moisture can escape. Bake it till the leather is tacky, but not sticky. Let cool, then flip onto saran wrap and roll. Cut the roll into 1 inch sections, put in the freezer and you have a healthy and sweet treat for working husbands, crazy kids, and moms with a sweet tooth.
Is this too much comment for my next idea? stop reading anytime. If you like some competition to motivate you, I do a health challenge with some friends and it definately helps me make sure we eat enough vegs, fruits, water, sleep, exercise, etc. Checkout: www.startgettinghealthy.blogspot.com or email me.
Ultimately, I think the key is to plan ahead (meal plan, snack plan, etc). My sis-in-law always puts out veggies to munch on while she is preparing dinner. She says its amazing how many veggies disappear.
I "discovered" ZipLoc steamer bags several months ago and now use them several times a week to add a healthy side dish to dinner. Cut up broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, zucchini, yellow squash, and/or carrots (or any combination thereof). Drop pieces in the bag. Add a couple shakes of your favorite seasoning salt. Seal and nuke on high for 6 minutes. Very fast, and oh so yummy, and extremely healthy! They really should give the inventor some sort of award...
